This spring, make your mental health a priority.

Two people holding hands in comfort.

Why do so many of us avoid our mental health, even when we need support?

You may have your reasons; family or work priorities, not enough time, perhaps even stigma around accessing the help you need. It’s understandable to want to keep going and push through until you feel better.

But if you don’t make time for your mental health now, you may be forced to later.

Your mental health is affected by factors in your everyday life, such as the stress of balancing work with your health and relationships. Mental health is the collection of emotions, thoughts, feelings, and sense of resiliency in managing your everyday life activities.

It’s not surprising then that mood and anxiety disorders make up one of the biggest health risks facing Ontarians today, and account for the leading cause of disability in working age adults

How do we make mental health a priority?

It’s not about getting it perfect; it’s about getting started. One step at a time.

Spring is a great time to take the first step towards making your mental health a priority. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Go for a walk. It’s a message that bears repeating: Even moderate exercise, like walking, can lift your mood.
  • Take some time to reflect. Reflection can help you to be more aware of your thoughts, behaviours and emotions in real time and less ‘reactive’ to everyday life stressors.
  • Talk face-to-face with a neighbour, friend or family member without the distraction of a phone. Real face-to-face conversation has been shown to increase feelings of connection.
  • Find out what services are covered by your plan. The ETFO ELHT provides the following paramedical coverage related to mental health support as part of the health care benefits:
Mental Health Practitioners* Up to $1,500 combined per benefit year

*Mental Health Practitioners include Registered Family Therapists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Registered Social Workers, and more.

To see a full list of service providers covered by your benefits plan, check your benefits booklet.

To support and protect your mental health throughout the year, OTIP also offers wellness programs to all eligible plan members who have coverage, insurance products and/or services with them.

It is important to consult your health-care provider if you have concerns about your mental health, or before you start a wellness program. Your health-care provider can help guide you on your mental health journey.
